body layer 2011
textured self
a work commissioned by the Textielmuseum Tilburg, tangibly transposes the film of bacteria taken from one human body on one specific day.
This project emerged from the project cartography of the human body, in collaboration with the bacteriographer Erich Schopf, where the bacteria membrane, consisting of individual skin bacteria and the ones from the environment on one specific day, were scientifically documented, researched and analyzed.
The work focuses on twenty body zones and transfers this normally invisible microcosm into a visible, hand-knitted, crocheted and textured macrocosm. The human is a hybrid, a multi-being, which can obviously only exist if the different forms of life on and in the body work together.
