The TEXTURED SELF, a work commissioned by the Textielmuseum Tilburg, translates the layer of bacteria that was taken from Sonja Bäumel’s body on one specfic day. This project emerged out of the CARTOGRAHY OF THE HUMAN BODY, in collaboration with the bacteriograph Erich Schopf, where the bacteria membrane consisting of individual skin bacteria and the one’s of the environment of one day were scientifical documented, researched and analysed. This scientific data are new interpretated into a hand-knitted and crocheted oversized body silhouette, representing a design language in-between science and art.
The hand-knitted and crocheted silhouette shows amount, colour and structure of the bacteria found on specific zones of her body on the 11th of november 2011. Sonja Bäumel focuses on twenty body zones and translates this normally invisible microcosmos in a visible, textured and oversized macrocosmos in order to inspire, provoke questions and confront people with the fact that the human is a hybrid, a super organism, which obviously is only able to exist if the different forms of life on the body cooperate.
